CONSPIRACY THEORY #20041028
traveller’s cheques. in a sense they are convenient because they’re not really money because if they’re stolen, you can usually get them cancelled. HOWEVER, nobody wants to let me use them. i STILL haven’t been able to pick up my bank card and i don’t really care because there’s no money in my account anyway. but i have to keep going the amex money exchange place to cash them. they are NOT a convenient cash alternative in that sense.
ok, so my awol flatmate was actually outta town for the past lil while, which is why he wasn’t home. i went out for a pint with him last night. yes… i had 2 half pints and he had 2 pints. he’s a pretty cool guy! get this, his brother is a rural doctor in… alberta! arun, there’s actually someone that likes calgary. he’s actually going there for the holidays to visit his brother. but because he’s only been to alberta, he has his misconception that we all wear cowboy hats and such. he was working in Switzerland for 3 years, then he had a choice between studying at uni of sussex or uni of sydney. the only problem with sydney was that there were too many restrictions whereas sussex allowed him a bit more freedom in what he’d actually do for his thesis. but as soon as he’s done here, he’s OUT!
which brings me to my next topic. i was reading the sunday times magazine and it was talking about the mass exodus of southern brits to the rest of europe and stuff. the main reason was because of the high cost of living, increase in population and shitty health service. this one couple that went to new zealand or something was complaining about the crappy customer service they’re getting though. that was a GOOD laugh! and then there were some that were sobbing because the french didn’t like them. well DUH, could it be because you don’t even make an effort to speak in french to them, but insist on being spoken to ONLY in english? and what’s worse is that some of them were complaining about the some of the immigrants in the uk as being a reason for them leaving.
so then we started talking about language laws. like in canada, the irish are trying to preserve the gaelic language. so kids have to learn it in school much like we have to learn some french. most of the kids don’t really care for it and would much rather learn english. it’s kinda like quebec and their wonky language laws. yes, i think it is a shame that canada is supposed to be a bilingual country and most people can’t and don’t care to speak french. but how does one change that? i agree with jamie that forcing people to learn a language won’t work, but then you’re at an impasse.
i gave this blog addy to a friend from work just for mindless entertainment. and he said it was cool cuz it was totally random thoughts. and i was just talking to somebody else the other day and kept fidgeting and playing different songs on his computer. after about 20 seconds i’d go to another one. it’s not like the conversation was boring, else i woulda gone back to my readings even though i was SICK OF THEM! do i have add or something?
